NOTE: The following information is provided as
a guide only to assist with your sale / purchase. This information
is not a substitute for professional advice or quotation.
Remove some risk from buying
used cars
- Research, read reviews, consumer reports, ask colleagues and friends, try to narrow your search to one or two models.
- Test-drive a few different cars of the same model, it will be much easier for you to compare their condition and pick the best one.
- Don't buy based on what you've been told, check out the car yourself very carefully. Ask a knowledgeable person who knows about cars to help you.
- As a final step, ask to see Safety Certificate.
- Do not give a deposit before the car is inspected.
- Be extremely careful when doing the paperwork. If you buy from
a private owner, make sure there are no registered liens against
the vehicle and that the person who signs the Bill of Sale is
the actual owner of the car. Check with REVS
to make sure the car has not been stolen.
- Don't look for the cheapest car. When it comes to used cars, "best deal" doesn't mean the cheapest one.
- Your goal is to look for a car in good condition for a reasonable price.
- The Red Book is the pre-eminent provider of vehicle identification and pricing information, and can be found on the web at http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/index.php
- The actual vehicle value depends on a cars condition.
Choosing the right car
- Decide exactly what you want. Simple, economical transportation? A small sedan with a small engine would suit this purpose. Don't buy a V6 or V8 engine or 4WD truck if you are looking for something really economical.
- Are icy roads common in your area? If this is the case, then you need a car with ABS.
- Towing a trailer? Then you will have to consider a car with more a powerful engine.
- Check out the market, see what models are available and see what fits into the price you can afford. Following this you will be able to narrow your search to just a few models.
